“Original music is a sensitive craft. Technicalities of playing a set can interfere with a performance and quickly diminish a band's impact on the crowd. Playing song after song can also be a drag sometimes with no change or diversity each time you play it. As a listener and as a player, it is important to remain fresh and new while maintaining the original integrity of the rehearsed music. The players want the listeners to know the tune, but it's got to be exciting for them too! This can be accomplished in Jazz yet there are still habitual practices and intense structure to most of its' improvisation. New Dew is a reaction to these issues observed in various genres of original music. The three-piece R&B/Funk ensemble uses Improvisation to break forms and meters. Their rehearsed music is recognizable but is able to change and embody different personas each time it's performed. New Dew's music transforms and reshapes each groove into a new song instead of stopping altogether. "This improvisational method opened our sound up to new designs and orientations of performance. We play songs within other songs, covers with original songs, we feature guest musicians, rappers, dancers. This way of playing allows us to do virtually anything and everything we feel like doing." Says Lead writer and keyboard player, Devon DiPaolo. A sonic design like this one requires a high level of musicianship and an ease of instrument. Mike Stavish, drummer and co-writer to New Dew is the reason this can be accomplished. The communication between the harmony, lead, and rhythmic parts in this band is integral to its' performance. Switching seamlessly between different grooves and reacting to changes and breaks of forms is what makes New Dew's drummer a unique player. Versatility is the name of the game and nobody does it better. Lastly, topping off New Dew's Bass, Harmony, and Rhythm is Kama Bell, lead Alto Saxophone. Kama is a Portland native, and former member of The Portland Youth Philharmonic. Her playing adds the pivotal and leading melodies of New Dew's sound. Combining these three factions creates a style of live music, unseen and uninhibited. New Dew is sure to set the stage and change the way we see live music today “ www.viewnewdew.com
